In recent weeks, the word "recession" has been thrown around on Television for far too many times. Many Wall Street firms are forecasting a global recession as early as 2023, citing inflation and higher rates as their concerns, as well as pointing to the recent 10-2 Years Treasury Yields Curve (we talked about that signal here).
It is often discussed that as economic conditions worsen, Gold would become a good investment. Today, let's examine whether this saying among the general public is truthful, by looking back at the price of Gold in history.
Below is a chart dating back to 1970, examining the price performance of Gold (yellow trace), marking periods of economic recessions in the US (shaded grey), and inflation (blue trace). Surprisingly, what you see is actually the opposite of the above-stated belief that you should buy Gold into a recession.
Hopefully this historical perspective has given you some insights into when may be the best time to buy Gold. At least with the data going back to 1970, it may be better to buy Gold leading up to or at the end of a recession. Once a recession officially hits, Gold prices actually peaks and declines.
